Kubernetes overview

Managed Kubernetes on VirtConsole provisions and operates Kubernetes clusters end to end. The panel creates the virtual machines, installs Kubernetes on them, wires up the networking, and exposes the API server through a managed load balancer. Customers click through a wizard; provisioning typically takes 5-12 minutes.

For each cluster the panel creates:

  • One or three control plane VMs (single, or high-availability).
  • One or more worker VMs, grouped into node pools.
  • One managed load balancer fronting the API server, listening on TCP 443 and passing traffic through to the control plane.
  • Three auto-managed security groups: one for the load balancer, one for the control plane nodes, one for the workers.
  • A kubeconfig file the customer downloads to use kubectl.
  • Every Service of type=LoadBalancer inside the cluster also gets its own managed load balancer, provisioned automatically.

The admin prepares the platform once per region and version:

  1. Bakes the control plane and worker VM images. See Image baking.
  2. Enables Kubernetes on a hypervisor group (region) and registers the supported versions customers may pick. See Admin setup.
  3. Operates customer clusters from the admin panel, including the admin-only Destructive controls.

The customer then:

  1. Creates a cluster from a wizard (region, VPC, version, control plane size, default node pool). See Clusters.
  2. Downloads the kubeconfig and runs kubectl against the cluster. See Access and security.
  3. Runs day-two operations from the cluster page: pools, autoscaling, upgrades.
